The 2026 season is getting closer and closer, and we are officially under 50 days until the Gators take the field against FAU to kick off the maiden voyage for Jon Sumrall. While Gator fans have their eyes on eight or nine wins as the floor for Florida, most Vegas projections and computer models have the Gators pegged for around six or seven wins.
In order for Florida to finish the season ranked and get the Jon Sumrall Era off to a great start, this is the three-game stretch that computer models seem to think is the most 50/50 and could go either way.
Three coin flip games for the Gators in 2026
September 19 at Auburn
This is a game we have pointed to throughout the offseason, and it will be the early litmus test for Sumrall, as it will be the most apples-to-apples game he will have in 2026. The Tigers also have a new coach, Alex Golesh, and brought in a ton of new transfers, many of whom were with Golesh at USF last year when the Bulls beat Florida in The Swamp.
From a distance, this feels like a game Florida would still be favored in, but we will also have a better idea of what Auburn looks like during Week One when they take on DJ Lagway and Baylor.
September 26 vs Ole Miss
On the flip side, one would assume that Ole Miss would be favored in this game. But whether it is roster construction or the fact that Ole Miss has a new coach, many models have this game as a straight-up 50/50 coin flip.
The lingering question for Ole Miss is whether Pete Golding can keep the magic going that Lane Kiffin left behind. Despite Golding’s run in the 2025 playoffs with the Rebels, he now has to prove he can do it for a full year.
Potentially helping Florida on this one is that Ole Miss has to face Kiffin and LSU the week before, so there is a narrative of an Ole Miss letdown when they enter The Swamp.
October 3 at Missouri
If Auburn is the litmus test, and Ole Miss is the chance for the early marquee win, then Missouri is the hidden trap that most Gator fans seem to want to ignore. ESPN’s FPI, for example, gives Florida just a 45% chance of winning this game.
But given their gatekeeper status within the SEC, this Missouri game is one Florida has to find a way to get past, especially if they lose the week prior to Ole Miss.
However it shakes out, Sumrall and crew need to go at least 2-1 during this stretch of three games. Even going 1-2 sets up a scary proposition, given the fact that the stretch of Texas, Georgia, and Oklahoma still looms on the schedule.
