Florida keeps falling apart in the moments that should be routine

Two more errors doomed the Gators again against Jacksonville

Following their series loss against Auburn, we mused that one of Florida’s biggest problems in 2026 was the inability to do the simple things correctly. The Gators are averaging more than an error a game and it is a big reason why it is close to impossible to trust this team once the postseason rolls around.

Kevin O’Sullivan even said Florida worked on bunt defense this week, but whatever they worked on didn’t translate to the game itself as two more errors sank Florida once again in a 7-5 loss to Jacksonville.

Two more errors doom Florida

The game started well as Florida put up three runs in the 1st for an early 3-0 lead. But then the bats went cold, and Jacksonville started to claw back with three runs in the 3rd inning to tie things up. Two runs in the 7th inning gave the Dolphins a 5-3 lead, and it was the 8th that things once again fell apart for Florida.

Two errors in the 8th allowed two more runs to score. Florida couldn’t field a bunt and threw it into the outfield, and then botched a potential double play that could have ended the inning.

Those two unearned runs were costly as Florida scored two in the bottom of the 8th, but that was it.

Afterward, O’Sullivan made it a point to highlight they are well aware of the issues that keep plaguing this team:

“Obviously, we made a couple more errors. We spent some time on Monday again, going over some bunt defense stuff again, and  just when you make those mistakes, they come back to hurt you. And it's not from a lack of effort, it's not from a lack of practice. We're working on the things that we know we need to improve on. It's just a matter of executing in key spots in the game.”

But the fact that we are this late into the season and these issues keep popping up with the regularity that they do, it makes one wonder if it’s too late to fix? As we keep saying, this Florida team could make a run to Omaha if the stars align with their starting pitching.

But when teams know they are essentially going to get a free base just by bunting the ball, it makes it really hard to trust this team once the NCAA Tournament rolls around.
