Florida has dipped its toe into the transfer portal once again and landed INF Caden Davidson. If you haven’t heard of Davidson, that’s perfectly acceptable, as only hardcore JUCO fans would have known of Davidson prior to this week.

And while JUCO prospects can have a hit-or-miss transition to SEC play, there is one stat with Davidson that makes him a super intriguing player who could wind up being an absolute steal if everything clicks in Gainesville.

Caden Davidson commits to Florida

Davidson was originally ranked No. 500 in the country by Perfect Game, so he was a notable prospect coming out of high school. A combination of factors led to Davidson ultimately going the JUCO route, and he enrolled at Gaston College in North Carolina, just outside of Charlotte. He was committed to Wake Forest, but he posted online last week that changes to their coaching staff had him back off that commitment.

The move paid off as Davidson was a JUCO All-American this past season, hitting .500 in 58 games. The stat that stands out the most and the one that feels like it could translate to SEC play is the fact that he hit 23 HRs while only striking out 28 times. For someone swinging for the fences as often as Davidson did, that is an insanely low amount of strikeouts.

The grand mystery is how well his game will translate and where he would slot into Florida’s lineup. As it stands now, Cade Kurland is the only infielder who won’t be coming back for 2026. Ethan Surowiec just announced he has resigned from Florida, following Brendan Lawson's announcement last week that he would return.

What seems to be set up is a battle between Davidson and Landon Stripling for the starting first baseman role, assuming Stripling comes back for the 2027 season. Stripling hit .289 with a .831 OPS in 2026 while hitting six home runs.

Davidson is the 7th player to commit to Florida out of the transfer portal, joining:

  • Zach Edwards, Oregon State right-handed pitcher
  • Jon Embury III, Florida Gulf Coast catcher
  • John Martinez, FAU infielder
  • Kyle McDaniel, Utah Tech infielder
  • Maddox McDougall, Jacksonville State right-handed pitcher
  • Trey Morris, Oregon State left-handed pitcher
