Florida is the king of the SEC and has reduced Kentucky to infighting

For the sole purpose of the SEC, Saturday’s game meant nothing for the Gators. Florida already had the regular-season title wrapped up, and all that their game against Kentucky meant for practical purposes was seeding in the NCAA Tournament, as the Gators now have a real pathway to a No. 1 seed.

But from a sending a message standpoint, Saturday’s game against Kentucky was a reminder to Wildcat Nation who is the king of the SEC. And given Kentucky’s own struggles, they have been reduced to infighting since they can’t fight back against Florida.

Florida sends Kentucky into a tailspin

After the final whistle blew, Kentucky legend and current radio analyst Goose Givens stated on air that he didn’t think Kentucky’s players believed they could beat Florida. Whether or not turning into Ted Lasso would have helped Kentucky is up for debate, but it is stunning for one of college basketball’s blue bloods to ever walk into a game with that mindset.

Kentucky coach Mark Pope seems to be feeling the pressure, given that his $22 million roster is a bigger flop than the 2025 edition of Snow White, and his postgame comments seemed to hint he is well aware of the narrative surrounding his squad:

"I believe we are going to win. We are heading down to Nashville to win… We can’t wait to get to it...I think our guys believe…we are going down there (Nashville) with 1 job and that's to win."

Again, this is supposed to be big, bad Kentucky. This is supposed to be one of the titans of the sport. And their own head coach is forced to sound like a U9 soccer coach to motivate his players. Pope might as well have been saying:

“Come on, guys, let’s go out there and give it our best, and after the game we can all get ice cream.”

Thankfully, those problems don’t exist in Gainesville because Todd Golden has built a squad more interested in winning than cashing paychecks. And Golden has built a culture that doesn’t require juice boxes to want to play hard.

Kentucky may have been the king once upon a time, but all kings lose their power at some point. Florida has taken that crown from Kentucky and has forced the Wildcats to point fingers at themselves.

It’s good to be the king.
