Florida-Georgia traded the Cocktail Party for a name only a boardroom could love

Florida-Georgia’s new corporate name misses everything that makes the rivalry special

This year marks 20 years since the Florida-Georgia rivalry stopped officially using the moniker “World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party” because school officials were worried about promoting excessive drinking for the game.

Ignoring the multiple beer ads that will appear on Saturday, encouraging fans to consume the thing that school officials were concerned about, the Florida-Georgia game has been special over the years because it maintained more of a party atmosphere rather than a corporate get-together that feels soulless and lifeless.

Which is why, even though Florida and Georgia fans don’t agree on a lot, the two sides can agree that the official name for this year’s game strays so far away from the soul of what this game is supposed to be.

Florida and Georgia fans agree the corporate name for Saturday is bland

The official name for this Saturday’s game is the Invesco QQQ Atlanta Gridiron Classic.

On the official website for the game, they boldly state:

“Don’t miss the fierce rivalry as UGA takes on Florida in college football’s thrilling matchup! Experience the passion and competition as these two powerhouse teams clash for bragging rights.”

Just imagine Jon Sumrall or Kirby Smart trying to say that in an ad with a straight face.

It litteraly sounds like some AI-generated blurb you would get as a preview in CFB 27. And while this two-year hiatus from Jacksonville is temporary and we'll eventually get back to normalcy, things like this feed into the overarching narrative that college football as a whole is being overrun by people in suits who don’t actually like it.

As Jon Sumrall said in his press conference, this Saturday isn’t just another game on the schedule. This is a rivalry that can’t even agree on when the first official meeting was. This is one of those games that can make or break the season every year.

And yet the Invesco QQQ Atlanta Gridiron Classic sounds like some low-tier bowl game featuring a 6-6 MAC team going up against a 5-7 SEC team that only made it in because there weren’t enough 6-6 teams and they happened to have the highest APR.

But it’s the same people in suits who came up with this name who want to convince everyone that a 24-team playoff is a good thing. It’s the same people in suits who are going to blast this name everywhere they can this week and profiteer off of it, but then turn around and tell fans they still need to donate money to NIL. And it’s the same people in suits who view college football as a pathway to make money rather than respect it as a cultural part of society.

Welcome to 2026, and good luck to everyone this weekend at the Invesco QQQ Atlanta Gridiron Classic.
