The University of Florida has been monikered as an "Everything School" over the years. The Gators are one of the few institutions in America where the expectations across the board are high, and the bar doesn't move whether you are football or the golf team.
Last night's national title in basketball solidified this moniker, and the Florida Gators now have a distinction no one else in America can claim.
Florida Basketball: If It's Lonely At The Top, I'd Rather Be Alone
Florida now has three national titles in men's basketball history. That adds to the three national titles they have in football in program history.
The list of schools that can claim this distinction is small.
It's really small.
It is so small that Florida is the only school in the country that now has three national titles in football and basketball.
The Gators were tied with Michigan State as the only two schools in the country that could claim at least two titles in each sport. The Spartans have two national titles in men's basketball and won three national titles in football before the dawn of cable television.
While we are at it, Florida is also the only school in the country that can claim multiple national titles in football and basketball AND at least one national title in baseball.
As a whole, the University of Florida has won 49 national titles in school history. That's 22nd overall, behind a bunch of schools who racked up titles while their fans had to listen on the radio and/or have racked up titles in sports that no one else participates in (looking at you, Stanford, and your 20 national titles in water polo).
It's great to be a Florida Gator, indeed, and when the bar doesn't move in Gainesville, amazing things can happen.
