Florida Gators News: Wyatt Langford continues hot streak, Liam Peterson signs, More

It’s been another big week for Gators in the MLB, some veteran and some on the field and some off of the diamond.

Former Gator Wyatt Langford continues to heat up

Since we last touched on Wyatt Langford heating up last week, the 24-year old former Gator has continued to smash the baseball in the last week of games.  He went 2-for-4 on Monday against the White Sox with a home run. He drove in two RBIs on the day and had two runs scored. Then on Friday he hit yet another home run, driving in an RBI and a run scored in Texas’ series-opener against he Seattle Mariners. It was a shot that got out in a hurry and went into the second deck. That gives Langford three home runs in the last week and a half after he had hit one on July 19 as well against the Braves.

He has now increased his average to .300 on the month, with a .349 OPS and .550 slugging. He has one double and three home runs on the month, with seven RBIs driven in and eight runs scored. He has a stolen base to add to his month as well.

MLB Network did a piece on him on Thursday and broke down how in the last 23 games he is hitting .365 with a .408 on-base percentage, slugging .698, and has nine home runs, with 22 RBIs and a wRC+ of 207.

Since June 12 Langford has the league-leading batting average (.365), is second in slugging, third in wRC+. He’s also slugging .800 against off-speed pitches.

One change that could be affecting Langford’s improvement is how much he has shifted his hands down on the bat. One small adjustment has helped Langford become one of the league-leading hitters over the course of the last month.

Liam Peterson inks contract with the Guardians

The final Gator has signed a major league contract. Liam Peterson, drafted in the first round (Pick No. 19) of the 2026 MLB draft by the Cleveland Guardians has come to an agreement with the organization on a contract. The Guardians signed Peterson for $4,530,500. That was the full slot value for the No. 19 pick.

Coming into the draft Peterson was ranked by most scouts and analysts as  the No. 2 right-handed pitcher in the class. He’s got a fastball that goes up to 99 mph and off-speed pitches that touch the mid-80mph range, including a nasty hammer curveball with late break, and a slider.

In his junior year at Florida, Peterson was 3-6, with a 4.59 ERA through 16 starts. He gave up 43 earned runs on 84 hits and walked just 36 through 84 1/3 innings. He struck out 111. Opposing hitters hit just .255 against him.

Last season Peterson ranked No. 7 in the SEC and 25th nationally for strikeouts. He was also named to the 2026 CSC Academic All-District.

Peterson will now officially take his talents out west to Cleveland and the Guardians organization.

He joins the five other Gators who have already signed their contracts. All Gator draftees have now inked their deals to begin their professional careers.

Florida Soccer reveals 2026 uniforms

We are not that far away from a team in Orange and Blue taking the field and representing the Gators. On August 5, Florida’s soccer team will begin its 2026 campaign with an exhibition game at home against Miami. The season will kick off for real on August 13 against UCF.

In advance of the season, Florida debuted their kits for the year. They are sharp and have some pop to them without trying too hard.

Florida is hoping to regain the glory it once had in the sport. The Gators haven’t had a three-game winning streak since 2019. Since then, longtime coach Becky Burleigh retired, Tony Amoto was fired after one year, and Samantha Bohon had four years most fans would rather forget.

New coach Nick Zimmerman came over from Mississippi State in the offseason after leading the Bulldogs to a 12-7-1 record in 2025.
