Florida Volleyball made a massive statement on Tuesday night by knocking off No. 11 Minnesota as part of the Big Ten-SEC Challenge. The Gators won in four sets (27-25, 24-26, 25-23, 25-21) to move to 2-0 on the season.
It wasn’t even the cleanest of efforts from Florida, who committed 25 errors and had a hitting percentage of .245, compared to Minnesota committing just 15 errors with a hitting percentage of .274.
But it was at the service line that Florida was able to power through and get over the hump, as the Gators had 11 aces on the night. In the first set, Florida was up 24-21 before Minnesota powered back to have a set point of their own at 25-24. Selena Leban then picked up a kill to tie it at 25-25, then hit back-to-back aces to claim the set.
Florida dropped set two despite being up 22-20, but recovered and tightened up in the close set three. Tied at 22-22 in set three, Leban picked up a kill, then Minnesota tied it back up. The Gators then got a kill from Brooklyn Briscoe followed by a Minnesota error to close it out.
In set four, Florida fell behind 21-18 before a 7-0 run to win the set and match. Kamryn Chaney closed things out with four straight kills.
The Gators will be back on the court tonight to take on Wisconsin at 8 PM on FS1.
Ciatrick Fason will be Mr. Two Bits for FAU game
Florida announced that Ciatrick Fason is going to be Mr. Two Bits for this Saturday’s game against FAU. Ciatrick came to Florida in 2002 as a prep All-American and saw action as a true freshman. He got an increased role in 2003 before his monster 2004 year. Ciatrick put up 1,267 yards rushing in 2004 with an average of 5.7 yards per carry.
He went on to be a 4th-round pick in the 2005 NFL Draft to Minnesota and had five touchdowns in the NFL. He is currently the head football coach for Neptune Beach Fletcher High.
Soccer gears up for another showdown
On Sunday, the Gators had a 1-1- draw against FAU. Florida outshot the Owls 18-8 but only Addy Hess could find the back of the net. It was the first time all year Florida failed to score at least three goals, and they moved to 3-1-1 on the year.
The Gators are now ranked No. 21 and will take on Youngstown State on Thursday before a Sunday showdown at home against No. 5 Wake Forest.
