Sunday was not a great day for New York Mets fans as the squad cemented its back-half collapse and lost to the Miami Marlins 4-0 to officially miss the 2025 MLB Playoffs. Even worse for Mets fans is that former Florida Gator Pete Alonso stated after the game he would be opting out of his contract heading into the offseason.
Alonso was on a two-year deal worth $54,000,000 that featured the option to opt out after year one.
It's hard to blame Alonso for the collapse the Mets had. The Polar Bear hit .272 with 38 HRs and 126 RBIs in 2025. The Mets had the best record in all of MLB as recently as June 12, but went 38-55 the rest of the way as injuries to their bullpen became too much to overcome.
Will Richard signs contract with Warriors
After winning a national title with the Gators, Will Richard was a late draft pick in the NBA Draft, going No. 56 to the Golden State Warriors. Typically speaking, late 2nd picks don't get guaranteed contracts with their respective teams.
But ESPN has reported that Golden State is going to sign Richard to a four-year deal where the first two years are guaranteed.
Richard could still wind up spending some time in the G-League to develop, but most seem to think it is a clear indication that Golden State believes in Richard's long-term potential with the squad.
Al Horford also signs with Golden State
In a moment that feels like coming full circle, Richard is going to be joined on Golden State's roster by Florida Gator legend Al Horford. The 18-year NBA vet has signed a multi-year deal with the Warriors after spending the past five seasons with Boston.
Horford averaged 9.0 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 2.1 assists last season with the Celtics.
After leading the Gators to back-to-back national titles in 2006 and 2007, Horford was drafted 3rd overall by the Atlanta Hawks in the 2007 NBA Draft. He's been a five-time All-Star and won his first NBA title with Boston in 2024.
