The front end of the 2024 season for Florida Football was not great for Billy Napier and crew. The Gators were blown out at home by Miami and Texas A&M, the latter of which we formally called for Napier to no longer be the head coach of the Gators.
And while it wouldn't have changed the outcome of the game, one of the key turning points against the Aggies was one of the most comical calls in football history that somehow didn't make a list of worst calls of the 2024 college football season.
Florida Football: Rules Are Rules
On3 put out a list of worst calls of the season and for the most part it is a fair list. It includes South Carolina having their pick-six against LSU called back, Virginia Tech having their Hail Mary against Miami denied, and Alabama's touchdown against Oklahoma being called back for "illegal touching."
Number one on the list was Texas not being called for targeting against Arizona State in the playoffs, a call made even more comical when one remembers what Trikweze Bridges was ejected for against Texas A&M.
In that game, Bridges made a routine tackle as an Aggies receiver was in the air with the ball. Everyone just assumed it was a two-yard gain as both teams set up for the next play.
But then a booth initiated a review that determined Birdges "led with the crown of his helmet" into the butt of the Aggie receiver, and Bridges was ejected from the game. Worse is that the SEC offices came out after the game and confirmed it was the "right call."
The “butt targeting” has to be one of the worst of the year as well 😭 https://t.co/nCcnY3ofnU pic.twitter.com/yDYeYuw3wJ

The moment was juxtaposed all season long as other far more egregious examples of targeting were deemed fine, while tackling a guy in the air from behind was deemed dangerous.
