Tight end continues to be an interesting area for Florida Football. For as much as the Gators love to use two tight ends they haven't always recruited the position as strong as we would like.
So, at first glance, it may seem like they are wasting their time with their latest offer, but on film there is a lot to like and Florida is trying to get in first before a plethora of others do.
Florida Football: Go DJ
DJ Howerton is a 6'6" tight end from Greensboro, NC. 247 and Rivals have him listed as a three-star, while On3 and ESPN have yet to rate him.
And if you follow our recruiting profiles here at Hail Florida Hail, you know we always try to stay honest with our evaluations, and with Howerton, there is plenty on film to drag him out of the low three-star range he finds himself in right now.
On film Howerton uses his body well to absorb contact and make catches in traffic. His long strides do give him some pull-away speed when he catches in space, and his size makes him tough to bring down.
His route running will probably hold him back from getting bumped up to a top 300 for now, but Howerton should easily be a top 400 or 500 player once ranking updates take place across all the major sites.
He holds offers from NC State, Wake Forest, and Kentucky in addition to the offer he just picked up from Florida.
