The transfer portal is open for business and Florida Football has already made its first official offer. Wide receiver is expected to be a position of need for the Gators, and it is one of the positions fans are hoping Florida will open the NIL bank for.

But the first name officially to receive an offer isn't one that most fans had on their early radar. Upon deeper inspection, he shared some metrics similar to one of Florida's key transfer adds from last year.

Florida Football: Go long

Reggie Virgil is not a name most college football fans would recognize right away. The three-star wide receiver out of Mount Dora has been with Miami (OH) the last three seasons. During his first two years of college football, Virgil had nine targets with just two catches.

But in 2024 he emerged as a top receiving threat for the Redhawks. He racked up 816 yards and nine touchdowns in 2024 off of just 41 catches. His yards per reception rate of 19.9 is 9th best in the country among wide receivers with at least 40 targets. Among those who ranked higher in this category was Elijhah Badger, who thrived off the deep ball from DJ Lagway.

Virgil was also 5th in the country in average depth of target, as he was an average of 18.4 yards downfield when the ball was thrown to him. He is also listed at 6'4", so there is further reason to be intrigued.

It should be noted that Virgil was targeted 82 times in 2024, and his reception rate of 50% was in the bottom half among the 25 wide receivers with the furthest ADOT. Badger, for example, had a reception rate of 66.1%.

Whether Virgil's low reception was due to QB play and whether he would thrive with Lagway is something the Florida coaching staff will need to figure out.

Virgil still has two years of eligibility left.
