In 2024, Florida Football felt like they had unlocked something with the connection of DJ Lagway to Elijhah Badger. The transfer wide receiver from Arizona State finished the 2024 campaign top five in the country in yards per catch with an average 21.3 yards per catch this season.

Badger is gone for next year, and one of Florida's top needs in the portal is wide receiver. We chronicled yesterday their offer to Reggie Virgil, who was also top ten in yards per catch in 2024, and Florida has another member in the top ten of that category on their radar for 2025.

Florida Football: Chase is on the case

Chase Sowell is a 6'4" receiver from ECU who was originally a lower-tier three-star prospect in the class of 2022. Sowell signed with Colorado but transferred to ECU in 2023 after Deion Sanders came to town.

Sowell had a respectable stat line of 46 catches for 622 yards in 2023, but it was in 2024 that he opted to just go deep on every play. He "only" caught 34 passes in 2024, but increased his overall yards to 674.

His average of 19.8 yards per catch was 10th in the country in 2024 among receivers with at least 40 targets and is just 0.1 below the yards per catch of Virgil.

Sowell did have a better reception rate than Virgil (58% vs 50%) and did so against slightly better competition (AAC vs MAC).

Based on a social media post from Sowell, the Gators have extended an offer but have yet to line up an official visit. The Gators are also still kicking tires on Oklahoma's Nic Anderson and LSU's CJ Daniels, who would be the two bigger names for Florida to get at wide receiver.

The transfer portal officially opened yesterday.
