Florida Football is exploring a transfer portal option at a position of need
Much of the focus for Florida Football in the transfer portal is on their pursuit of a wide receiver. The Gators have been poking around at a couple of under-the-radar prospects as well as some high-profile names.
But wide receiver isn't the only position of need for Florida at the Gators will be getting a visit from one of the higher rated safeties in the portal.
Florida Football: Stay safe
Zechariah Poyser is a safety from Jacksonville State. He was a largely ignored prospect coming out of high school in Wildwood, and coming into the 2024 campaign, he wasn't a player anyone had on their radar.
After redshirting in 2023, Poyser took 808 snaps with the Gamecocks in 2024. He was targetted a ton by opposing defenses with 69 passes thrown his way. That was the second most of anyone in college football in 2024.
But on those 69 targets, he only gave up 33 receptions, and his reception rate of 47.8% was 26th best in the country among the 356 safeties who took at least 200 snaps in pass coverage. Helping his cause were the eight pass breakups he had, the third most in the country, along with three interceptions.
Add it all up, and he had an NFL QB rating against 57.4, good for 47th in the country.
By comparison, Jordan Castell had a QB rating against in 2024 of 117.1, 290th in the country.
As with any group of five prospect, the question mark for Poyser is whether one year in Conference USA will translate to the SEC. According to Poyser, he is also visiting LSU and Auburn.
Given that Trikweze Bridges, Asa Turner, R.J. Motten, and D.J. Douglas are gone next year, Florida is in need of beefing back up the safety position even with Castell, Gregory Smith, and Bryce Thornton all slated to come back in 2025.
