Florida fans will run through a wall after hearing Jon Sumrall’s pregame speech

Jon Sumrall is a certified psycho.

We mean that as a compliment, by the way.

One of the very real problems Florida fans had with the Man in the Black Polo is that he just never felt like a football coach. He always felt like a fan who had won some contest to be on the sidelines, but was more interested in the experience of being there than in anything happening on the field.

And so, as Florida posted a behind-the-scenes look prior to Saturday’s game against FAU, it is safe to say that the Gators have a full-blown football coach who is fully invested in the end result every Saturday.

Jon Sumrall wanted Florida to make FAU feel the pain

Florida posted an 11 minute cinimatic recap of Saturday’s game on their various social media channels. As a side note, unlike Georgia, this video was not behind a paywall, so good job, Florida. The video highlights the team's meetings in the lead-up to the game and features some of the pregame stuff, including Sumrall’s pregame speech to the team.

Now, given it’s FAU, one might expect Sumrall to be a bit reserved and save some of his best material for some of Florida’s bigger games down the road. So let’s take a look at what Sumrall had to say:

“I hope we get to play until 2 AM. We don’t get to do this **** enough. Everything you got, all freaking night. Don’t let them off the hook. Lock the ****ing gate, take their *** into the deep water and see if they can ****ing swim. They can’t because we’re going to ****ing choke their *** out.”

Alrighty then.

Now, here is a spoiler alert for some people: this is how a college football locker room should feel. The problem with The Man in the Black Polo is that it frequently felt like he was giving soliloquies meant for an 8 AM philosophy class. We would compare him to a poet at a coffee shop, but even slam poets have more energy than he ever did.

Does making a metaphor that you wanted to essentially murder an Owl make one a good football coach? No, by itself it does not. There are still plenty of other factors that go into being a great coach besides being able to cut a WWE promo.

But the thing about football, and part of what Sumrall alluded to, is that it is a sport where you have to bring the juice every Saturday. If you can’t get fired up 12 times in a single year, then when can you?

And as we saw on Saturday, when the head coach is fired up and brings the energy, The Swamp will respond in kind.
