Like it or not, one of the early backdrops to the 2026 season for Florida will be the juxtaposition between Aaron Philo and DJ Lagway. Philo was essentially the handpicked QB by Jon Sumrall and Buster Faulkner to replace Lagway, whom they essentially pushed into the transfer portal themselves back in December.
Even if Lagway finds success at Baylor, it continues to be clear that he was a broken man in Gainesville. Yet another national article on Lagway has dropped that once again tries to paint a picture of who is to blame that doesn’t fully match reality.
DJ Lagway once again passes the blame for his failures at Florida
Lagway was featured on Thursday in a piece by Yahoo Sports that again painted the narrative that he was a broken man in Gainesville. The theme of the piece isn’t anything new compared to the narrative Lagway and his team have tried to paint all offseason.
The headliner quote was Lagway talking about his mom visiting him after his five-interception performance against LSU. In the piece, it says they had the following interaction:
"God's got you," she told him.
"Momma," he said back, "I think God forgot about me."
There is no getting around that 2025 didn’t go the way that Lagway and Gator fans as a whole would have liked. And if he transferred to Baylor because he and Sumrall just weren’t a match, and he gave a narrative that he just needed a fresh start without trying to throw Florida under the bus, most fans would be perfectly fine with that.
And to be honest, even now most fans aren’t actively rooting against Lagway for the 2026 season. Which is why this narrative about fans in Gainesville having it out for Lagway last year just doesn’t match reality.
In this latest Yahoo piece, the author Ross Dellenger states that Lagway “allowed intense criticism from a rabid fan base to drag him down.”
The piece later states:
“Nikita (Lagway) grows emotional when discussing her son's time at Florida. She holds no ill will toward the former coaching staff or university administrators. In fact, as part of DJ's NIL deal, the Lagways got to use a private jet to fly to his games.
She does remain disappointed in the Florida fan base. Disgusted, in fact.”
Pause.
We can’t account for every anecdotal example floating around out there, but Florida fans as a whole were still very supportive of Lagway, even after it became clear he wasn’t living up to expectations in 2025. Most of the blame, even after the LSU loss, was aimed at Billy Napier’s Ask Madden offense rather than Lagway.
And where it gets really hard to take this claim seriously is when the Lagway camp refuses to cast any blame towards Napier’s staff. He sold Lagway the moon and then set him up for failure.
Also, just so we are clear, the Lagways enjoyed his NIL deal that was worth millions and gave them a private jet to games.
Question: Who ponied up the money for that NIL deal? Billy Napier or the fans?
As a news flash, fans will have a voice when they are hounded for money to pay for NIL deals like Lagway's, and then that same player doesn’t perform at the level fans were sold.
Just so we are clear.
DJ Lagway’s stories don’t line up
Again, we can’t account for everything that may or may not have been said by online trolls. What we can account for is how this offseason his story hasn’t been consistent.
Lagway talks about being isolated in Gainesville, and the fact that he took online classes was brought up again. Online classes weren’t the reason Lagway distanced himself from his teammates, something he himself took the blame for back in a March piece with USA Today.
Speaking of that piece, in the March piece with Matt Hayes, it stated:
“Let’s stop here, and make something clear: Lagway says he was completely healthy during last season. There were no lingering affects from the injuries. No excuses.”
Which is why this quote from his mother, Nikita Lagway, doesn’t line up:
"It bothered me to hear people say he's weak or injury-prone," Nikita said. "I just want people to know, this season right here is going to be the first of my son's career since 10th grade where he's healthy and injury-free."
One, if you haven’t been healthy since your 10th-grade year, that is the definition of being injury-prone.
Two, was DJ Lagway healthy, or was he not healthy in 2025? Which version are we supposed to believe?
Again, we here at Hail Florida Hail harbor no ill will towards Lagway. He had a great freshman campaign and fell short of that in 2025. Some of that was because of him and a lot of that was because of the coaching staff around him.
But one of the things we are very consistent about here at Hail Florida Hail is that we are going to protect the Gator brand above all else. And when narratives start getting written that have zero pushback, this is where we step in to pushback.
