Little by little, it is becoming clear who Florida has momentum with for their class of 2027 and who they do not. Jon Sumrall spent January all around the southeast and is now working hard to line up official visits.
On Thursday, the Gators got news that they are in the top five for a cornerback from Georgia with an intriguing skill set for Jon Sumrall and crew.
Florida makes the top five for Chase Johnson
Chase Johnson is a four-star cornerback from Georgia. Listed at 5’11” and 160 pounds, Johnson is a top 200 overall four-star for 247 and ESPN, while Rivals has him as a three-star.
On film, Johnson paints an interesting picture of what he might be able to do in college. He’s a two-way player who also plays running back as well as some wide receiver. He’s also returns punts, and if he were asked to be the kicker, he could probably do that too.
As a running back, Johnson doesn’t quite have the breakaway speed one would want for the SEC, but he makes up for it with his shiftiness and ability to cut and change directions on a dime. There is a reason why he racked up almost 300 yards rushing on just 30 carries during the 2025 season, because he is extremely elusive in the open field.
That ability to flip his hips and move is what serves him well when his film gets to the portion of him actually playing cornerback. He never seems panicked and is able to velcro himself to opposing wide receivers with ease. He’s also not afraid to get physical and exert his will despite his smaller stature.
He feels like the type of player whose physical attributes in a camp setting are going to limit his star ceiling, but make no mistake about it that he is an effective player on the field who understands what is needed to be a shutdown corner.
Johnson just dropped his top five school and Florida made the list alongside FSU, Georgia, Miami, and Auburn. He has yet to set official visits, but one would have to assume Florida is going to get one this summer.
