Coming off a series loss in back-to-back weeks, it was fair to muse whether the Gators were essentially just Aidan King and friends. The sophomore ace has morphed into one of the most dominant pitchers in all of college baseball, but at times it seems like he is surrounded by a squad of players who would struggle to make it on a high school JV squad.
Friday night was exhibit A of this on going trend as King delievered another gem of a performance only to get litteraly zero support en route to a 4-3 defeat to Oklahoma.
Florida drops game one against Oklahoma
King did his part going 7.0 innings with 10 strikeouts while giving up just one earned run.
And yet, his night ended with a no decision.
If one wants a snapshot of how the little things just continue to go wrong for Florida, look no further than the 2nd inning when Florida loaded the bases only to wind up with a NOBLETIGER (No-Outs Bases-Loaded Ending with Team Incapable of Getting Easy Run). This time around the culprit was Caden McDonald grounding into a fielder’s choice, which in theory still would have scored a run expect Cade Kurland was called for runner’s interference which resulted in a double play that also resulted in Ethan Surowiec having to return to 3rd base.
The inning ended with no runs scored.
Even with that, King left with a 3-1 lead heading into the bottom of the 8th inning after Blake Cyr hit a solo home run.
After a strikeout and a walk from Ernesto LugoCanchola, the Gators brought in Joshua Whritenour for an attempted five out save.
He didn’t make it through the first out before giving up a game tying triple.Â
A two-out single proved to be the winning run and just for good measure the Gators made sure to have another error.
Forida is now 29-17 on the season and the problem is that Friday’s loss isn’t in a vaccum. It’s a contunation of Florida finding new way to lose games that they could have won with just simple fundemental baseball.
Game two is at 7 PM with Liam Peterson getting the start.
