The rich get richer? That's exactly what's going on right now for Florida and Jon Sumrall, as the new Gators head coach is on a recruiting heater this spring. Things were only made better with 4-star running back Andrew Beard picking Florida over Clemson and others.
ESPN throws cold water on Florida's offseason momentum
Throughout his recruitment, the electric playmaker picked up 40 total offers, but in the end it was Florida that came out on top for him. So, what was it that led to this breaking news for the SEC side? Beard didn't hold back in saying just how much he believes in the future of the program thanks to Coach Sumrall:
"Really just the fire and passion that I see in Coach Sumrall," Beard said to start off on why he picked the Gators in the end. "And just the belief that Coach (Kevin) Faulkner and Coach (Chris) Foster have in me. Really just the support they've shown me."
Jon Sumrall's passion helped Florida land an electric new RB commit
So, the energy that Sumrall has brought with him to Gainesville is making a big impact already for the program? Florida fans knew this about him, but reeling in a stud running back like this confirms that too. Yeah, replacing Billy Napier with him continues to be gold.
Getting Beard to commit of course wasn't easy too, as Clemson once looked like the favorite to get things done. Dabo Swinney and his staff must have been feeling pretty confident, but Sumrall never stopped showing Beard a ton of love, which led to him ultimately deciding to play his college ball in the SEC.
Tennessee and Georgia were also among his finalists, but the lure to head to The Swamp and be a game-changer for Sumrall was too much to pass up on. With Beard now committed, Florida holds 14 pledges for the 2027 haul, with that group ranked No. 5 in the country per 247Sports.
For the month of May alone, Sumrall has been able to grab three pledges in Beard, safety Kailib Dillard and defensive lineman Stive-Bentley Keymajou Yondui. Will more be on the way soon? Potentially, as Sumrall has been on fire and he's going to celebrate this latest Beard news for a little while, and understandably so.
