At The Masters, Rory McIlroy did everything possible to try and not win The Masters. He blew multiple leads and was forced to go to a sudden-death playoff hole with Justin Rose before he finally prevailed.
Florida Football has had their fair share of games over the years where they did everything they could to throw a game away before eventually prevailing in the end.
The following are five recent games where Florida tried to give the game away before finally coming away with the victory.
Florida Football: FSU still can't beat the Gators with an interim coach in 2021
Florida has Billy Napier today because Dan Mullen gave up in 2021 and got himself fired before the season ended.
The finale in 2021 was a battle between Florida and FSU, both of whom were 5-6 and seeking bowl eligibility. Florida shot out to a 24-7 lead off a Dameon Pierce touchdown with a little over 12 minutes to play and it looked like the Gators were going to cruise to victory.
But FSU came back with a touchdown, and Florida punted on their next two drives to open the door for FSU to score again to make it 24-21.
The Seminoles botched their onside kick and Florida hung on to survive.
2017 Hail Mary After Collapse
Probably the best mirror image of Florida being like Rory was their 2017 win over Tennessee. The game is best remembered for Tyrie Cleveland hauling in a Hail Mary from Feleipe Franks, and it is often forgotten for the sequence that took place in the lead-up.
After the first three quarters were rather dull, CJ Henderson had a pick-six to make it 13-3. Tennessee came back and scored before Brandon Powell had a touchdown to make it 20-10 with 5:13 left.
Given how inept Tennessee's offense had been to this point, that should have shut the door, but the Volunteers went 75 yards in 30 seconds to make it 20-17.
Franks then threw an interception that set up a field goal to make it 20-20 with under a minute to go.
But his 63-yard toss to Cleveland made sure everyone in Gainesville went home happy.
Treon Harris beats FAU in 2015 in OT
The Gators entered this 2015 contest ranked 8th and still had an outside shot of making the 2015 playoffs if they could win out.
Instead, Florida almost had one of the most shocking upsets in college football history.
Florida was a 31-point favorite against FAU but nothing went right in the first half and the game was scoreless. Florida came out at halftime and put together two touchdown drives to go up 14-0, and it seemed like they would pull away.
Expect that didn't happen, and FAU clawed back to send the game to OT.
Florida scored a touchdown on their opening drive in OT, but the extra point was blocked to once again open the door for a massive upset.
FAU got down to the nine-yard line on their drive but stalled out to give Florida the win.
Bad 3rd Quarter Against FSU In 2012
Florida entered Doak Campbell Stadium in 2012 ranked 4th and looking to finish an 11-1 regular season. For 29 minutes and 30 seconds, it looked like the Gators were going to cruise as they got out to a 13-0 lead and had FSU on their 28-yard line.
The Seminoles hit two big plays to set up a 50-yard field goal, but Florida still led 13-3 at halftime.
Then, a big punt return set up a short field for FSU to make it 13-10.
Then a Jeff Driskel fumble set up another short field, and it was 17-13.
Florida then punted, and FSU made a field goal to take a 20-13 lead entering the 4th quarter.
From there, Florida got their act together and scored the next 24 points in the 4th quarter to pull away and eventually win 37-26.
Vanderbilt Makes It Too Close For Comfort In 2011
Entering halftime against Vanderbilt in 2011, everything was going according to plan. Florida had a 17-0 lead after a 55-yard field goal by Caleb Sturgis right before the half.
It was still 17-0 with six minutes to go in the 3rd quarter when Jordan Rodgers hit a 26-yard TD pass to make it 17-7.
Florida responded with a field goal but Vanderbilt didn't go away and Rodgers ran it in from eight yards out to make it 20-14.
Jeff Demps scored a 52-yard touchdown to seemingly put the game away, but Vanderbilt came back down the field again and scored with 1:16 left to make it 26-21.
Florida recovered the onside kick and survived.
