Five previous times Florida Football unexpectedly turned to their backup QB
2015
Besides 2020, this might be one of the bigger seasons of "What If" for the Gators in recent history. Will Grier and Treon Harris started out the year in a rotation, before Grier took over for good against Tennessee and threw the famous 63-yard catch and run to Antonio Callaway to win the game.
Grier was then front and center when the Gators beat then number three Ole Miss and after beating Missouri the following week to start out 6-0 it felt like anything was possible.
Then the news broke Grier had tested positve for a banned substance and was suspended for a year. Harris came back and played respectable against LSU, throwing for 271 yards and two touchdowns as the Gators lost thanks to a fake field goal from the Tigers.
Harris would keep the train on the tracks until the regular season finale against FSU, but losses to the Seminoles and Alabama to close out the season sent Florida to the Citrus Bowl rather than the playoffs.
Grier transferred to West Virginia after the season and has been bouncing around the NFL since 2019. Harris wound up at Tennessee State in 2017 and has not pursued any coaching in college.
2013
The season that almost all Gator fans have tried to flush from their memory banks, Jeff Driskel started the season with an unimpressive win over Toledo and a tough loss to Miami before he was lost for the season after breaking his leg against Tennessee.
Tyler Murphy took over and led wins over Tennessee, Kentucky, and Arkansas before the wheels completely fell off the bus. Murphy would later get hurt himself, forcing Skyler Mornhinweg into action.
It didn't go great for Morninweg, who failed to win a game and went 14/25 for 122 yards in Florida's infamous loss to Georgia Southern.
Dirskel ended up transferring to Louisiana Tech and has managed to stick around in the NFL as mostly a backup since 2016.
Murphy left for Boston College and spent a couple of years in the NFL.
Morninweg wound up playing some in the CFL and is currently listed as an off the field assistant with Colorado.
