When the brackets came out on Selection Sunday, most Florida fans had this Saturday evening circled as a night that could define the season for the Gators. Most experts predicted that Florida would take on Houston in Houston with a berth to the Final Four on the line. Instead, fans showing up today at the Toyota Center are going to watch Illinois and Iowa duke it out for the right to show up in Indianapolis.

The fact that Florida fans will be watching this game from their couch is painful enough. The pain doesn’t get any easier looking at the final eight teams as a whole that are still standing in March Madness.

Florida ended its season far too soon

Tonight’s matchup of Iowa and Illinois is going to drive Florida fans nuts. The Gators were a 10.5-point favorite against Iowa, and despite falling right into the trap the Hawkeyes set, the Gators still had a chance to keep dancing with one defensive stop.

Instead, Todd Golden opted to press, and Florida’s season ended.

Illinois was always the lurking darkhorse of the South Region, and they will be a 6.5 point favorite today after they dispatched of Houston. We are not saying Illinois would have been an easy opponent, but Florida did beat Illinois before the start of the season in a secret scrimmage, and that was without Boogie Fland.

But it is not just the South Region that has Florida fans wondering “What if?”

In the West Region, Arizona is going to take on Purdue. Florida had a shot to tie the game with less than a minute to play against Arizona and missed, while Purdue just had to survive against Texas, the same Texas squad Florida beat by 13 points.

In Sunday’s action, Tennessee will take on Michigan. Florida ran Tennessee out of the gym earlier this year while Michigan didn’t pull away until late against Alabama, the same Alabama squad Florida also ran out of the gym, and that was with Charles Bediako.

The East Region final will feature Duke and UConn, two teams Florida took to the wire earlier this season. The Gators had a late lead against Duke before a defensive breakdown cost them, while Florida had a shot to beat UConn at the end, only for their late-game woes to end their hope.

The moral is that Florida is on their couch because it couldn’t execute late against Iowa, and the Gators have no one but themselves to blame for the fact that they aren’t playing this weekend.

But when looking at the final eight teams still standing, one can’t help but wonder how close this weekend was to being one that forever lived in Gator lore.
