Denzel Aberdeen’s Florida homecoming says plenty about what Todd Golden has built

As Florida Basketball gears up for the 2026/27 season, the expectations couldn’t be higher for the Gators. Now that Denzel Aberdeen has been cleared, seemingly every preseason projection is going to have Florida ranked No. 1.

The fact that Aberdeen is back in the first place highlights the culture Todd Golden has built in Gainesville, and Aberdeen seems to recognize that now that he is back.

Denzel Aberdeen is excited to be back with the Gators for one last run

Aberdeen met with media members and talked about his journey from Florida to Kentucky and back. The way Aberdeen phrases it, he claims his odyssey to Lexington was never Plan A:

“I really didn’t want to leave here truly. I really love this place. It was very hard.”

And if we think back to last season, there never seemed to be any animosity or ill will from Florida’s players, or even Golden himself, towards Aberdeen. Gator players almost seemed to all understand that Aberdeen was offered a huge pile of cash from Kentucky, and if we are being honest, every man has his price.

And if we are also being honest, what irked Florida fans about Aberdeen leaving was never about taking a payday that was potentially double what Florida had offered; it was the comments his dad made following his departure to Lexington. We don’t need to rehash all of the quotes that his father said when they left, but he made them in a way that tried to paint a narrative that Golden never believed in Aberdeen.

It was foolish then, and even more foolish now given Aberdeen’s return.

Now that he is back in Gainesville, it also serves as a massive marketing tool for Golden and his staff. Aberdeen left Florida, went to Kentucky, spent one year in Lexington, and decided he would rather come back to Gainesville. Kentucky is supposed to be one of the meccas of college basketball, and Aberdeen decided that Florida was better.

Now with legal drama and transfer portal drama behind him, Aberdeen can just focus on basketball. On paper, he can be the scoring punch that the Gators lacked at times. There are still elements of his game that need to improve, but he did become a better distributor during his year with Kentucky.

And given that Florida is going to once again create matchup nightmares across the board, Aberdeen might just be the missing piece to once again cut down the nets in March.
