Damieon George plays a reverse UNO card and will stay with Florida Football
The transfer portal can be a wild place, and Florida Football fans experienced the full gambit of the portal on Saturday.
After announcing late Friday night he would be going into the portal, a starter for the Gators has reversed course and now plans to come back to Florida in 2025.
Florida Football: Reverse Reverse
It was reported Friday night that Damieon George was going to hit the transfer portal. George had moved over from tackle to right guard for the 2024 season and as the season played out, George took 414 snaps at right guard and was adequate. His pass blocking was good enough, as he allowed seven hurries but no sacks. His support in the run game was debatable, as the right side was viewed from a perception standpoint as the weaker side of the line.
Bryce Lovett started mixing in snaps at right guard by the end of the season and started against FSU. Lovett took 28 snaps in that game.
So when news came out that George was slated to hit the portal, most assumed it would be Lovett's job to lose heading into 2025. But less than 24 hours later, news came out that George was going to stay with Florida and would not be hitting the portal.
Sagas like this are weird but anything is possible in the age of the transfer portal. Whether George planned to enter due to NIL money, playing time, or other reasons remains to be seen. George staying does provide the Gators with depth and competition heading into the offseason and the right guard position will be a focal point of competition.
