After the twists and turns of signing day, Florida Football has formally finalized the flip of five-star wide receiver Dallas Wilson out of Tampa. A combination of proximity to home, along with the chance to play with DJ Lagway, helped Florida pull off the flip of the Oregon commit.
With Wilson now officially coming to Gainesville, the wide receiver room for the Gators will be a combination of high upside potential while also requiring someone to step up to do someone they haven't done.
Florida Football: The floor
There is a lot of high-end potential that will be on the roster for Florida in 2025. Eugene Wilson was a freshman All-American, Aidan Mizell was a highly touted prospect in the same class as Wilson and flashed a couple of times in 2024, Tank Hawkins is the fastest player on the roster, J.Michael Sturdivant had over 700 yards receiving in 2022 with Cal, Marcus Burke has almost 500 career snaps, while TJ Abrams is also a high upside prospect.
Now add Wilson with fellow five-star receiver Vernell Brown, and the possibility of adding former five-star receiver Johntay Cook, and there will be competition this offseason to be first in line to catch passes from Lagway.
But...
The other truth is that Sturdivant is the only receiver of that group to even top 300 yards in 2024. Wilson was hurt but also relegated to 24 orbit motions a game, Mizell kept getting beat out by Burke for snaps, Hawkins would have been the perfect player to slot into the Wilson role but wasn't, Cook was beat out at Texas, and Brown and Wilson will be true freshmen in 2025.
The point is that this group will have a wide range of variance in 2025. There is enough upside in this group that one can paint a narrative of Florida having enough weapons as is heading into 2025. There is also a lack of proven production, and one can't guarantee that.
Don't get it twisted: Florida's wide receiver room improved on Sunday night, and in a talent acquisition business, you need someone like Wilson to walk into your building.
