Tim Tebow was ranked 9th

One of the ironies about Tim Tebow's time with Florida Football is that the season that earned him a statue outside of The Swamp was actually the worst season the Gators had during his stint in Gainesville. Tebow won the 2007 Heisman Trophy, but the Gators went 9-4 and finished 13th in the AP Poll.

But while Tebow's individual efforts that year have stood the test of time, a new graphic list from Fox Sports has us asking questions.

Florida Football: Tebowmania

The list ranked the Top Ten Heisman Seasons Ever. The list in order was:

  1. Barry Sanders
  2. Joe Burrow
  3. Travis Hunter
  4. Cam Newton
  5. Charles Woodson
  6. Tony Dorsett
  7. Johnny Manziel
  8. Marcus Allen
  9. Tim Tebow
  10. Lamar Jackson

Some of these are fair enough to be ahead of Tebow. Cam Newton, for example, singly handily dragged Auburn to a national title with Gene Chizick as the coach.

Some of these are a little more debatable, like Charles Woodson or Johnny Manziel. Woodson's 1997 season is more subjective than anything, while Manziel had a TD/INT ratio of 26/9 passing versus Tebow's 32/6 in 2007.

But there is one name that jumps out as such comical clickbait that you probably have already cocked your head to the side with a look of "Huh?"

Travis Hunter had a great season, and it is true that he did things no college football player has done before in 2024. However, Colorado's strength of schedule in 2024 was 64th in the country, and it's debatable whether Hunter was even the best wide receiver in the country. His ultimate claim to fame is that he took a ton of snaps.

Tebow, meanwhile, had 23 rushing touchdowns in 2007, the third most in the country and just one behind Ray Rice. He was also first in the nation in passing yards per attempt and had the second-best Passing Efficiency Rating in the country behind future Heisman winner Sam Bradford.

It is easy in the modern day to be prisoners of the moment, but that doesn't mean we need to throw away the past.
