It’s no secret that Brendan Bett’s actions in Florida’s loss to USF on Saturday were not acceptable in any way, regardless of what school you go to, but were especially unacceptable for a player who represents a prestigious school like the University of Florida, who has more eyes on them than many other programs.
“It’s unacceptable,” said head coach Billy Napier of Bett’s actions. “When a guy does something like that, he’s compromising the team. He’s putting himself before the team.”
When Bett spat in the face of USF offensive lineman Cole Skinner, it gave the Bulls a new set of downs that ultimately led to them going downfield to score a game-winning field goal to defeat the Gators in the Swamp in what was a true swampy mess of a game.
With any competitive athletic events, elite athletes can let the heat of the moment get the best, or in this case, the worst of their emotions. Players get caught up and do or say something that gets them into trouble, and unfortunately for Bett, not only did his actions get him ejected, but ultimately led to his team’s 18-16 loss to then unranked South Florida in front of the Gator Nation.
Defensive back Devin Moore acknowledged this earlier in the week.
“Sometimes your emotions can get high, but you can’t jeopardize the team,” Moore said. “Take accountability for your actions, and just clean it up when we see it on film,” he said.
Quarterback DJ Lagway acknowledged the remorse of his teammate after the game on Saturday.
“he was in there crying and stuff like that, feeling bad, talking to the coaches, talking to the players and apologizing for it,” said Lagway. “He’s a heck of a player. He made a mistake there. That doesn’t identify his character at all.”
On Tuesday, Bett released a written public apology for his actions.
Again I’m very sorry for the actions I displayed on Saturday. That is not the man I was raised to be and I hope in the future I’m able to show that! pic.twitter.com/SU14jFVmVu

Below the apology was the true definition of one of Florida’s theme songs, “We are the boys,” in the line that states, “In all kinds of weather, we all stick together.” Fans responded to Bett with support, the kind of support that you’ll only receive from the Gator faithful, including comments like:
- “Respect the ownership of your actions that impacted a lot of people, most importantly your teammates. I hope that you can grow from this and help you become a better person.”
- “Mad respect Brendan!
- "It’s difficult when you are fighting so hard for your team and one little action that you would normally never do just happens because you’re so passionate at that split second. At the same time you’re just a kid as well but, kids and adults we all make mistakes. Owning up to them and learning from them is what makes people like you different from others! We know you’re a great guy turning into a wonderful man because Florida will develop you into something special . Props again for your apology and I know, gator nation forgives you! Go Gators”
- “Go Gators”
- “In All Kinds of Weather.”
- And many other comments in which the Gator Nation supported their player.
It has not been announced by the University of Florida as to whether or not Bett will receive an internal punishment or suspension.
