We interrupt the excitement and euphoria of Florida Basketball to interject a sad reality for the 2025 season:
The Florida Gators are not good at baseball.
Now, that's fine if you are on the basketball team; the problem for Florida is that the baseball team isn't good at it either. And after a historic sweep at the hands of Vanderbilt, it is apparent the Gators have no answers to fix their problems.
Florida Baseball: It Will All Be Over Soon
For the first time ever, Florida was swept at home by Vanderbilt.
The Gators lost 6-0, 3-2, and 11-3 to drop to 1-11 in SEC play and 20-14 overall.
The pitching depth is what it is for Florida at this point, and it reared its head again on Sunday. After Caden McDonald pitched three scoreless innings to allow Florida to claw back to a 4-3 deficit heading into the 7th, the bottom fell out once again in the 7th and into the 9th.
But beyond just stat lines across the board from both the pitchers and batters looking anemic, what has been the most troubling thing for the Gators and what has been inexcusable all season long has been their complete inability to do any of the little things correctly.
On Friday, Colby Shelton got thrown out at 2nd trying to extend a single while Justin Nadeau failed on a sacrifice bunt attempt to move the runners.
On Saturday, Bobby Boser got thrown out at 3rd on a reckless attempt to go 1st to 3rd.
On Sunday, Billy Barlow came into the game and promptly committed a balk to bring home a run.
These are just small microcosms of Florida's season. Whether it's getting picked off at first or being unable to advance runners, the Gators, all season long, have lacked any sense of awareness on the diamond.
And when you combine that with the fact that they are now 120th in walks allowed per nine innings and are 65th in batting average, it's all adding up to a team that is simply getting outclassed in SEC play.
Even Kevin O'Sullivan getting ejected this weekend wasn't enough to fire up the team and light a spark.
This past weekend was supposed to be a catalyst for Florida to go a run and keep dreams of Omaha still alive.
Just remember that nightmares are dreams, too.
