Billy Napier thanks Scott Stricklin with embarrassing Gators performance vs Texas
You've got to be kidding. On Saturday, the Florida Gators are taking on No. 5 Texas, and while not many of us thought an upset was on the way, did we think things would get this low for Billy Napier and his players?
When we started writing this article, Texas was down 28-0. But wait, there's an update! That's right, another Texas score has been posted and it's 35-0 Texas at halftime. For the rest of you watching at home, it's fair to say that this team gave up on its head coach. The players stopped fighting, which is inexcusable.
Before kickoff, Nick Saban backed Napier as head coach of Florida, saying he had changed the culture of the program. This came shortly after Scott Stricklin announced that Napier, whose seat appeared to be red hot, will be back next season. So, how has Napier thanked him? By producing one of the worst halves of football people have ever seen for this program:
Billy Napier has the Florida Gators looking awful against No. 5 Texas
As you can see in that clip above, a horrendous effort was showcased by the Florida defense from preventing the Texas running back from scoring. What kind of a message does this send to fans and alums when Napier has his guys playing like this with the rest of the country watching?
It's a terrible look for Napier and the university as a whole. This is Year 3 of the Napier era in Gainesville and it has been nothing short of a disappointment. Countless eyes were raised when it was revealed he'll for sure be back in 2025.
Plenty of people have been calling for him to be fired for quite some time, but that's not going to happen. However, what does Napier have to lose now since Stricklin already said he's safe? That call from the Florida AD looks even worse. Things are a mess for Florida in Austin and it's 100 percent on Napier. This is a pathetic showing.
