The Florida Gators are going to take a tumble in the Top 25, and it might be a little worse than some of the other teams in the poll that have previouslylost, because 45-17 is just such a bad number. Still, I believe the Gators will stay in the polls, which is more than I can say for Mississippi State, who got shellacked at home by Alabama,
Otherwise, there wasn't a lot of movement around the poll, unlike last week when several teams in the poll lost and many tumbled outside the rankings. Here's what I predict the AP Top 25 Poll will look like going into Week 6.
- Texas Longhorns (1)
- Georgia Bulldogs (2)
- Miami Hurricanes (4)
- Notre Dame Fighting Irish (3)
- Ohio State Buckeyes (5)
- Indiana Hoosiers (6)
- Alabama Crimson Tide (7)
- BYU Cougars (10)
- LSU Tiges (11)
- Texas Tech Red Raiders (12)
- Ole Miss Rebels (12)
- Utah Utes (13)
- Oregon Ducks (15)
- Tennessee Volunteers (17)
- USC Trojans (18)
- Oklahoma State Cowboys (19)
- Missouri Tigers (25)
- Houston Cougars (20)
- Florida Gators (8)
- Iowa Hawkeyes (14)
- SMU Mustangs (21)
- Boise State Broncos (22)
- Pittsburgh Panthers (NR)
- UCLA Bruins (23)
- Kentucky Wildcats (24)
Florida and Mississippi State couldn't handle the headlines
I know Florida dropping 11 spots and Mississippi State dropping out of the poll seems a little harsh, but we're still early enough in the season for losses to really matter and losing by four or five scores doesn't look good. Both the Gators and the Bulldogs have quality wins against Top 25 teams on their resume, but both teams were being watched to see if they were worthy of the rankings that were bestowed upon them and they came up short.
One loss is just one loss and there's plenty of time for the Gators to come back. Those games against Texas (October 17) and Georgia (October 31) will decide if Florida will be in the CFP discussion when November rolls around.
But is Alabama better than Texas?
Georgia feels like the best team in the SEC and Texas is certainly in the mix, but what about Alabama? The Crimson Tide are scoring nearly 50 points a game and Keelon Russell is probably top-3 in the Heisman race if we're being fair. This Georgia-Alabama game in Week 6 feels like a true Clash of the SEC Titans and right now, I'd have to say that the winner has the rights to be called the best team in the conference.
Next week will be close to the midpoint of the regular season. It's getting late pretty early for some teams, and we're also seeing teams that could almost be considered locks for the CFP. Georgia, Alabama and Texas feel like locks, but Florida has some work to do.
