The Florida Gators are set to make a splash in the 2024 basketball season, thanks to a deep backcourt and key defensive additions. With seasoned guards like Walter Clayton Jr., Will Richard, and the newly added Alijah Martin, Florida’s lineup has the tools to overcome last year’s challenges and elevate the program to new heights.

Last season, the Gators struggled on defense, finishing 94th nationally in efficiency and allowing an average of 86.8 points per game in March. This year, the addition of Alijah Martin, a standout defender from Florida Atlantic, might be the key to reversing those trends. Martin, known for his athleticism and defensive prowess, recorded 56 steals in his senior season and brings valuable experience to the team.

His presence in the backcourt, alongside Clayton and Richard, will be crucial for bolstering Florida’s defense.

Clayton, who led the Gators in scoring with 17.6 points per game last season, is returning for his senior year with high expectations. His leadership, combined with Martin’s defensive skills, creates a formidable backcourt that not only scores but also locks down opponents. The chemistry between these experienced guards will be essential as Florida faces nine teams ranked in the preseason Top 25.

Coach Todd Golden has strategically built a roster that blends experience with potential. Alongside Martin, the Gators also brought in Sam Alexis and Rueben Chinyelu to solidify the frontcourt. But it’s the backcourt where Florida truly shines. With players like junior guard Denzel Aberdeen set to take on a larger role, Florida’s depth will allow them to rotate effectively and keep the pressure on opponents.

As the season approaches, the Gators are poised to improve on both ends of the court. If Martin’s defensive impact can fix the team’s previous weaknesses, Florida’s deep backcourt could carry them to success in the highly competitive SEC.
