It may not happen overnight, but Jon Sumrall and his staff are injecting infectious energy into the Florida football program. While things quickly deteriorated and became stale under his predecessor Billy Napier, Sumrall may have what it takes to turn Florida around in a hurry. Of course, he needs to land a few more blue-chippers out of high school. Could he potentially flip a five-star in Easton Royal?
One remark from Royal to Steve Wiltfong of On3/Rivals painted a perfect picture of what is going on.
“The energy in the building is completely different.”
Royal visited Gainesville last week and had an absolute blast! In his conversation with Wiltfong after the fact, he shared that he had been interested in Florida under the previous administration prior to committing to Texas at the end of November of last year. Royal is planning on taking an official visit to Florida on June 11. He also has official visits lined up with Tennessee (June 5) and Texas (June 19)...
According to the 247Sports Composite, Royal is the No. 1 player from Louisiana, the No. 2 wide receiver in his class, and the No. 9 overall prospect in the 2027 recruiting cycle. The Brother Martin standout out of Louisiana appears to be dead-set on playing his college football over in the SEC. It is interesting that LSU and Notre Dame are not as likely to flip him as a program like Florida seems to be.
Now that we know how much Royal digs the vibes coming out of Gainesville, let's see if he could flip...
Easton Royal finds Jon Sumrall's Florida program to have great energy
The biggest takeaway from Royal's extended commentary to Wiltfong is that Sumrall seems to have invigorated some great level of enthusiasm within the Florida program, almost immediately. Because Royal is from out-of-state, Florida has as good of a chance to flip him as anyone. Again, he committed to Texas at the end of the regular season. Texas missed the playoff, while Sumrall reached it at Tulane.
That potential New Orleans connection, no matter how small it might be, could impact Royal's chances at flipping to Florida. Even though Sumrall is a defensive-minded head coach, he did hire a fantastic offensive coordinator in Buster Faulkner away from Georgia Tech. Even if Florida is only moderately competitive on that side of the ball, the Gators could get this thing turned around quickly.
In the end, if the energy seems good and the vibes are high, then why would Royal not consider potentially flipping to Florida? He has all spring, summer, and fall to see what transpires on the collegiate gridiron. While Texas faces insurmountable pressure this season in a playoff or bust scenario, Florida faces far less than that. The Gators do need to get to a bowl game, but that is it.
No matter what happens, Florida left a strong impression on Royal to view them in a positive light.
