Last week, Florida football saw a shakeup to its staff when Billy Napier opted to let go of secondary coach Corey Raymond and defensive line coach Sean Spencer.

The latter of the two wasn’t unemployed for long before finding a new home within the SEC.

Florida Football: See you next season

We chronicled on the site that the metrics were too woeful to justify keeping Raymond. Pick any secondary-based category, and the Gators were near the bottom of the country.

The firing of Spencer felt a bit harsher. Florida had to deal with Justus Boone going down with a season-ending injury during camp, and Jack Pyburn tore his ACL against Arkansas, which put added pressure on Princely Umanmielen to perform. While the Gators didn’t have the sack numbers some would have liked, Umanmielen was still named to the All-SEC team.

His new home will still be in the SEC, as he was announced he would be joining Mike Elko’s new staff at Texas A&M. According to a report from Bruce Feldman last year, Spencer was originally going to join Elko at Duke as a co-defensive coordinator before he opted to come to Gainesville.

Texas A&M will make the trek to Gainesville next season on September 14th for the third game of the season.

Spencer originally came to Florida football after two seasons with the New York Giants. Prior to that, he was the defensive line coach at Penn State from 2014 to 2019.

Spencer came up the coaching ladder the long way, with stops at Wesleyan, Shippensburg, Trinity (CT), UMass, Holy Cross, Villanova, Hofstra, Bowling Green, and Vanderbilt.

He followed James Franklin from Vanderbilt to Penn State in 2014 when Franklin has hired as the head coach.

He was a Division Two Preseason All-American in 1992, playing for the Clarion Golden Eagles.
