Florida basketball: Alex Condon is already turning heads
By Will Thomas
Florida basketball has a lot of new faces around the program this season that they acquired both in the transfer portal and on the recruiting trail.
One guy who was a little under the radar heading into this season and who is already making some noise is freshman big man Alex Condon.
Overshadowed by Micah Handlogten and Tyrese Samuel in the offseason, Condon wasn’t seen as a guy who would be a huge producer for Florida, especially early in the season.
Through three games, however, he’s shown that he can be one of the Gators’ most valuable players throughout the year.
Florida basketball: What can’t he do?
Now, you do have to take early-season college hoops with a grain of salt. You aren’t always playing elite competition that you’ll have to play in February and March.
But Alex’s ability to dominate on both ends of the floor against lesser competition tells us that he’ll be just fine when we get to the SEC schedule.
Last night against FAMU he put up 17 points on 6-8 from the field with six rebounds and three assists. He also had two blocks down low and made 2-3 from downtown.
Having a 6’11” body with the ability to defend the paint and shoot the three is invaluable in today’s game, and the Gators seem to have struck gold.
Condon was a three-star recruit coming out of Australia and was ranked as the 32nd-best center in his class. It’s safe to say he’s showing that his ceiling is a bit higher than that.
If Alex can continue to develop as the season goes on, and he earns some more minutes, you’ll be hearing about him a lot as one of the better big men in the SEC.
He’ll be a player to watch throughout his career in Gainesville.
