Last season, Georgia tight end Brock Bowers tore apart Florida football. Bowers had 154 yards receiving, which was a career-high at the time, and one touchdown.

But after leaving the game early against Vanderbilt, word broke yesterday that Bowers would undergo surgery and be out of commission for at least a month.

Florida Football: High ankle sprain

Bowers was rolled up on going out of bounds during a designed run around the edge. He left the game and did not return for the Bulldogs. It was announced yesterday that Bowers had a high ankle sprain and had “tightrope surgery” to help stabilize and repair the ankle.

Bowers’ expected recovery is between four to six weeks, which would keep him out of the upcoming matchup against Florida football. It is hard to understate what a matchup nightmare Bowers is for opposing defenses, and part of what led to his big day last season was Florida being inept at guarding opposing tight ends.

Georgia will most likely look to Oscar Delp as their primary tight end in his absence. Delp has been solid enough for the Bulldogs, but it is far from the two-headed monster Kirby Smart was able to roll out last season when he had both Bowers and Darnell Washington.

Both Florida and Georgia have a bye week this week before their annual matchup in Jacksonville. The Bulldogs continued to be ranked number one in the country, but it is mostly based on being back-to-back national champions rather than looking like the number one team in 2023. They have had multiple slow starts, and their only truly complete game so far was their 51-13 beatdown of Kentucky.

Even if Florida isn’t the team to knock off Georgia, Bowers’ absence makes life more difficult for the champs to three-peat for the 2023 season with Ole Miss, Missouri, and Tennessee on the horizon.
