Florida Football: Former Gator QB Anthony Richardson likely done for year
Former Florida football quarterback Anthony Richardson‘s promising rookie season with the Indianapolis Colts is likely over due to a shoulder injury. Colts owner Jim Irsay said that Richardson will ” probably ” miss the rest of the season and is likely heading for season-ending surgery on his right shoulder.
Richardson, who the Colts selected with the No. 4 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, suffered an AC joint sprain in his right shoulder during the Colts’ Week 5 victory over the Tennessee Titans. He missed the Colts’ Week 6 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars, and Irsay said the team’s evaluations indicate that the injury will be season-ending.
Florida Football: Get well soon
Irsay spoke with ESPN to give an update on the status of their rookie QB.
"“The most likelihood is he’s probably going to be gone for the year,” Irsay said. “I mean, it’s not definite but [he] probably misses this year and we’re going to have to contend with that factor.”"
Richardson played in four games for the Colts in 2023, going 2-2 and passing for 577 yards with three touchdowns and an interception while adding 136 yards and four touchdowns on the ground.
The Colts will likely turn to Gardner Minshew for the rest of the season. Minshew struggled against the Jacksonville Jaguars last week, committing four turnovers in the 37-20 loss. Minshew and the Colts hope to rebound this week against a tough Cleveland Browns defense.
As we saw with Florida, Richardson’s athleticism was unquestioned, but concerns about his ability to stay healthy lingered during his time at Florida. His hamstring injury in 2021 kept him out of multiple games. He also sat out of the Gasparilla Bowl that season after knee surgery.
