On Thursday, Florida basketball forward EJ Jarvis announced that he is retiring from basketball. Jarvis, a graduate transfer from Yale, had not participated in team activities for several weeks due to personal reasons.

In a statement posted to Instagram, Jarvis said that he had been playing basketball since he was four years old and that the game had played a huge role in shaping him into the man he is today.

He also said that he was grateful for the support of his coaches and teammates at Florida.

“At this point in my career, I feel it would be best to pursue other opportunities in life,” Jarvis wrote. “So with that being said, I have made the difficult decision to step away from the game of basketball.”

Florida Basketball: Moving forward

Jarvis was expected to be a key contributor for the Gators this season. He averaged 11.3 points and 5.5 rebounds per game at Yale last season and was considered a solid defender.

His departure leaves a hole in the Gators’ frontcourt, but they still have some depth at the position. Tyrese Samuel, Micah Handlogten, Alex Condon, and Thomas Haugh are all expected to play significant roles this season.

The Gators also have a number of other experienced players, including guards Kyle Lofton and Myreon Jones.

Todd Golden and crew are hoping for a bounce-back season in 2023-24 after missing the NCAA Tournament in Golden’s first season at the helm in Gainesville.
