Florida Football Overrated Opponents: FSU

Plenty of preseason prognostication has the Neighbors to the West pegged as a playoff team for 2023.

FSU fans seem to believe they have pulled away from the pack and are ready to make it back to the promise land.

Our friends over at Chop Chat, the inspiration for this piece, said the following about the FSU schedule:

"“Miami and Florida sucked under new head coaches, as predicted last year. However, there are a few trending picks that some FSU media have pointed out they believe could give FSU a tough game in 2023. “"

They are correct, Florida wasn’t great last season and was not at the standard that Gator fans expect.

But if you want to know why the prospect of hosting FSU isn’t creating fear in 2023, it is because the worst team in recent Florida history was 26 yards away from tying the game against the greatest FSU team in recent history.

And if the world’s most blatant facemask had been called, the Gators would have had 1st and 10, 13 yards away from tying the game.

So while FSU fans enjoy their crying face emojis when thinking about Florida, there is a reason the ESPN FPI metric has the Gators favored over the team that lost to NC State and Wake Forest last year.

Will Florida actually win? Who knows. But it is far from the David vs Goliath matchup that some seem to think it will be.
