Florida Football Overrated Opponents: Kentucky

Kentucky has become something of a house of horrors for the Florida Gators in recent history. After 30 years of domination, Big Blue has finally cultivated a respectable football team capable of being a well-respected gatekeeper in the SEC.

Which is part of the point, Kentucky has never been an elite team, and any team ranked in the top 20 should be capable of beating them in a given season.

Last year all the flack Billy Napier caught for going 6-7 despite having Richardson never seemed to make its way to Lexington, KY, despite Mark Stoops having Will Levis, who himself was the projected first overall pick at one point, and going 7-6.

So while Kentucky has Devin Leary this season, he is not projected as of now as a meaningful NFL draft prospect. Should we believe the hype that Kentucky is untouchable?

Kentucky was picked fourth in this year’s SEC preseason poll and was much closer to being picked third than they were being picked fifth, where the Gators ultimately landed.

Florida has been abysmal the last two seasons, and it took a blocked field goal returned for a touchdown and a pick-six in back-to-back seasons for Kentucky to put the Gators away.

ESPN’s FPI has the game as a toss-up, and in truth, if Florida wants to go even 6-6 this season, it will almost be guaranteed to include a win over Kentucky.
