Florida basketball: Gators in top ten for elite SG VJ Edgecombe
By Will Thomas
Florida basketball completely reshaped its roster through the transfer portal during the offseason, and now Todd Golden’s squad looks ready for a better year in his second year at the helm.
But the Gators also have to get back to recruiting high schoolers at an elite level, which Golden is well aware of.
Florida recently made the top ten schools for VJ Edgecombe, a 4-star shooting guard from Long Island Lutheran in Glen Head, New York.
The Gators will have to beat out some basketball blue bloods if they want to land his services.

Florida basketball: Always a threat to score
What makes VJ such a good guard is his ability to score the ball efficiently from anywhere on the court.
At the All-American camp this year Edgecombe put on a show. He averaged over 20 points a game, getting buckets from deep, midrange, and the rim.
His athleticism is obvious, and his effort is impossible to ignore. He just wants to score and doesn’t care when or where he does it.
On3’s Industry Ranking has VJ ranked as the 17th-best player in the country, the fourth-best shooting guard in the 2024 cycle, and the third-best player coming out of New York.
At 6’4”-180, he already has the length to be an effective scorer and defender but could stand to add around 10 more pounds so he can be more of a presence on both sides of the court at the college level.
Per On3’s RPM, St. John’s is the favorite to land JV at 8.8%. The next three on the RPM aren’t in his top ten, so they may want to update that.
The Gators have no presence on the RPM, but UF being named in his top ten is clearly a reason for optimism as his recruitment continues.
If Walter Clayton Jr. and Zyon Pullin can showcase what guards can do in Golden’s scheme, Florida can become a serious contender for VJ quickly.
