Following a historic season for Florida baseball, Wyatt Langford was drafted fourth overall in the 2023 MLB Draft by the Texas Rangers earlier this month and has officially signed a deal with the club.

And if things go according to plan, the Florida Gators will have back-to-back top ten picks in the MLB Draft around this time next Summer.

Florida Baseball: Jac has got your back

In case you need a reminder of Jac Caglianone’s season, he belted 33 home runs while batting .323 in 2023.

But part of the magic of Caglianone was he also sported a 4.34 ERA with an opponent’s batting average of .190.

It is this productivity and potential that has Caglianone listed as the 8th best MLB prospect according to MLB Pipeline.

The narrative that will surround Caglianone heading into the 2024 season is whether or not he projects as an MLB pitcher. His fastball obviously has enough life to it and can hit close to 100 MPH, but consistency issues were a theme throughout the season and reared their ugly head during game three of the College World Series finals.

He projects better as a hitter, but there are some things in his game that MLB scouts will probably want to be cleaned up. He struck out 58 times in Florida’s 71 games, but 15 of those strikes outs came during the postseason run for Florida baseball, and it felt like, at times, that he was so determined to hit a home run that he would overswing in lieu of opting for a single.

Given what Florida baseball is bringing back for the 2024 season, the chances the Gators will get back to Omaha and be led by Caglianone will be high.

And given the growth in popularity that college baseball as a whole has had, the chances for Caglianone to be a household name nationwide are extremely high.
