Florida football recruiting: Gators flip Tawaski Abrams from FSU
By Will Thomas
Florida football recruiting got a big win on the recruiting trail tonight, flipping a big-time offensive threat from FSU.
4-star wide receiver Tawaski Abrams, who had long been thought to be a flip candidate, made it official with his announcement a little bit ago.
I’ll just get it out of the way now, this feels pretty good taking a talented guy from FSU and Mike Norvell.
But Abrams also gives us some more clarity on one of the few question marks that remained in Florida’s class.
Florida football recruiting: Zipping around the field
We discussed it when we very first wrote about Abrams a few months ago, but what may be his most appealing attribute is his speed and quickness.
He’s a blur on tape and can hit any small gap and turn what looks like a modest gain into a big play.
Abrams isn’t limited to only playing outside. He also gets a decent bit of run in the ground game, where he’s just as explosive as downfield.
He has logged a 21.53 second 200m around the track, which was 8th in Florida. He also has multiple sub-11-second times in the 100m (10.62 PR).
In his junior season, he carried the ball 21 times for 248 yards and two touchdowns. As a receiver, he caught 37 passes for 429 yards and five touchdowns.
Those numbers don’t jump off the page, but his average yards per rush and catch speak to the kind of playmaker he is.
Abrams took an official visit to Gainesville the weekend of June 16th and was openly impressed with the run of commitments that Billy Napier and the Gators went on while he was there.
After a quiet few weeks, we finally know that the visit paid off.
There’s no doubt that having DJ Lagway being a Gator helped Florida pull off the flip. What wideout doesn’t want to play for a QB like DJ?
Tawaski flipping also gives us some clarity on UF’s wideout recruiting. They may still be after Jeremiah Smith and Chance Robinson, but Abrams fills that hole pretty well.
