Florida Football: Five teams the Gators have never played
Florida football has played a ton of teams in its history. According to Sports-Reference.Com, the Gators have faced 122 unique opponents during the history of the program.
But with limited openings for non-conference scheduling along with bowl tie-ins that limit who Florida could face during bowl season, there are several notable teams that the Gators have never actually played in program history, and we here at Hail Florida Hail are going to explore the five most notable teams the Gators have never faced on the gridiron.
Florida Football Teams Never Faced: TCU
Florida has faced Texas, Texas A&M, Houston, and Baylor, but the Gators have never faced the Horned Frogs on the football field.
Even though TCU has had a program since 1903, there isn’t an automatic reason why the two programs would have crossed paths. TCU was in the Southwest Conference from 1923 until it disbanded in 1995.
From there, TCU went on a journey to the WAC, Conference USA, the Mountain West, before finally finding a Power Five home in the Big 12.
But even given their appearance in the national title game last season, it would be hard for a team to schedule TCU hoping for an opponent that would for sure boost their own strength of schedule.
From 2018 through 2021, the Horned Frogs had a combined record of 23-24.
But if TCU can continue its momentum, especially in a now weakened Big 12 once Oklahoma and Texas leave, it wouldn’t be out of the realm of possibility for Florida and TCU to meet in the expanded playoffs down the road.
