Florida football recruiting: Gators in top six for 4-star Texas athlete
By Will Thomas
Florida football recruiting hasn’t let up on recruiting the state of Texas and going after some of the best players coming out of the Lone Star State.
The Gators have already landed some of the best players coming out of Texas in the ’24 cycle, and are now in contention for one of their elite athletes.
Florida is in the top six for Derrick McFall, a 4-star ATH out of Tyler, Texas.
The other schools on his list are Texas, Texas A&M, TCU, Alabama, and Louisville.
Florida football recruiting: Going after a do-it-all guy
McFall is listed as an athlete, unbound to any certain position, and for good reason. He does a little bit of everything for Tyler High.
As a passer, he completed 27 passes for 445 yards and four touchdowns in his junior year. That same season, he ran the ball 44 times for 218 yards and a touchdown, as well as catching 18 passes for 226 yards and another touchdown.
While none of those stats blow you away individually, his ability to consistently do them all is what has him ranked so high.
McFall is listed as the 360th-best player in the country, the 14th-best athlete in the class, and the 60th-best player coming out of Texas according to On3’s Industry Ranking.
As the Gators head into battle with his final six schools, the favorites are the Texas schools. A&M is currently the heavy favorite with a 92.4% chance to land McFall according to On3’s RPM, with Texas back in second place.
TCU has a good bit of work to do as they sit behind Louisville, but Billy Napier and the Gators have a steep climb ahead of them.
Derrick hasn’t made a trip to The Swamp yet, which the staff will have to work on quickly if they don’t want to fall behind.
But McFall could be a great addition to a class that already has talent at a bunch of offensive positions. He can serve as a jigsaw piece to fill any holes in the class.
