Florida Football Recruiting: Jerrae Hawkins will be the fastest WR in NCAA
The day didn’t end well for the Florida Gators in baseball, but Florida football got some good news as four-star wide receiver Jerrae Hawkins announced his commitment to the Gators for 2024.
And while Hawkins won’t look imposing when he arrives on campus, his speed will be evident the instant he takes a step.
Florida Football: Like a blur
While he is a four-star prospect from all four major services, he is only listed in the top 300 by ESPN and 247. At 5-8, 165 pounds, it is easy to have reservations about his size.
But we here at Hail Florida Hail talk about guys that claim to have track speed and guys that have legit track speed.
In Hawkins’ case, he ran 10.37 seconds for the 100 meter dash this past track season. That was good for the 7th fastest time in all of Florida in 2023 and the 4th fastest for an underclassman.
To put in further perspective just how fast 10.37 seconds is, Hawkins would have made the finals on the Big 10 Outdoor Track championships this past season and would have just missed out in the ACC, Pac-12, and Big-12.
He would have won conferences such as the Atlantic 10 and the Big East.
10.37 seconds would place him in the top 200 of all the collegian sprinters in the country.
Did we mention he is a junior in high school?
The moral of the story is that Hawkins will be a problem for opposing defenses to account for, and there are going to be plenty of plays where the Gators will just need to get Hawkins the ball and let him do the rest.
And it will be a welcome addition because Florida has been lacking a true speed threat recently.
Hawkins also took the Twitter to announce that he will be running track as well for the Gators.
