Florida football passing leaders – No. 2: Danny Wuerffel, 10,875 yards

Let me just start this page off by listing all of the awards that Danny Wuerffel won in the 1996 season.

He was a Consensus All-American and won the Davey O’Brien Award, the Heisman, the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, the Maxwell Award, SEC Player of the Year, and the Walter Camp Player of the Year.

That’s a pretty crowded shelf for most guys over their whole careers. Danny did it in one fall.

He also led the country in multiple categories in both the 1995 and 1996 seasons. He was top of the list in passing yards per attempt (10 and 10.1), passing touchdowns (35 and 39), total yards per play (8.4 and 8.3), and touchdowns responsive for (37 and 41).

He led just the SEC in both of those years in passing yards (3,266 and 3,625) and total yards (3,125 and 3,525).

After one of the best all-around college careers of all time, Danny was drafted in the 4th round by the New Orleans Saints, where he spent three seasons before also making stops in Green Bay, Chicago, and Washington.

He had a 4-6 record as a starter with a 52.6% completion rate and 12 touchdowns to 22 interceptions.

It’s hard to understand why all these Gator greats struggle in the NFL, but regardless of his pro success, that statue outside of Ben Hill Griffin Stadium will keep Wuerffel in the hearts of Gator fans forever.
