Florida football recruiting: Gators make the top eight for 5-star wide receiver
By Will Thomas
Florida football recruiting is looking to build off of a sensational last three days on the trail, where they’ve landed six commitments and now have a consensus top-five class in the country.
But Billy Napier and his staff aren’t satisfied with where they are right now and are still all gas going after some of the best players in the country.
One of those guys is 5-star wide receiver Cam Coleman, out of Phenix City, Alabama.
This afternoon, the Gators made the top eight for the elite pass catcher. Other schools on his list include Auburn, Georgia, Clemson, LSU, and others.
Florida football recruiting: Lots of work to do
If the Gators want to be the destination for Coleman, they have their work cut out for them. Coleman is a consensus top-five wideout in the country, and a top-ten player in the nation according to On3’s Industry Rankings.
With that kind of pedigree, you have a lot of competition as you go after him.
Right now Auburn is the heavy favorite with a 77.9% chance to land their in-state prospect, followed by Texas A&M and Clemson.
Florida isn’t very close to the top, but there’s no reason to count them out.
Coleman took a surprise unofficial visit to Gainesville three weeks ago, showing that he has a clear interest in the program and what Napier is building.
He also told On3 after that visit that the Gators are “definitely getting an official visit”. So clearly, Cam liked what he saw on that first visit.
If Coleman does find his way to Gainesville, this could be a ridiculous WR haul for the Gators. They already have Izaiah Williams and seem destined to flip one of Chance Robinson or Tawaski Abrams.
They’re also still working on Jeremiah Smith, the 5-star Ohio State commit, and now have a path to land Cam Coleman.
Add on to that 5-star QB DJ Lagway, and Florida could have one of the best offensive classes in the country. But they still have plenty of work to do.
