Florida football: What is the Gators’ ideal eight game schedule?
By Will Thomas
Florida football vs Oklahoma Sooners
It figures that we’ll see the Gators play one of either Oklahoma or Texas next season. The league will want to get the matchups that draw the most eyes in their inaugural season in the SEC, and the Gators vs the Sooners will certainly be one of those.
For starters, these teams just look pretty on the football field with each other. Florida’s blue and Okie’s red just look nice.
But otherwise, these two teams have a good bit of history.
On the positive side of that history, the Gators took down Oklahoma in the 2008 BCS National Championship behind Tim Tebow and a crushing defense to win what is still Florida’s most recent title.
On the negative side is the 2020 Cotton Bowl, where Spencer Rattler and the Sooners had their way with a short-handed Gators team and ran them out of the building by a score of 55-20.
Those two games aside, this game would be fun to watch in 2024. Both teams have regressed a bit from their former glory, but both schools also seem to be on an upward trajectory in their own respective ways.
And what better way to get accustomed to your new conference mate than a primetime showdown?
Obviously, we’d like to play them in The Swamp, but an annual/semi-annual home and home between these two would be a really cool opportunity for fans of both teams to go to a venue they may not have been to before.
