Florida football: What is the Gators’ ideal eight game schedule?
By Will Thomas
Florida football vs Georgia Bulldogs
This one is pretty obvious.
Plus, it’s the only game that’s guaranteed (mostly) to stay the same. SEC commissioner Greg Sankey said that the league will look to preserve the biggest rivalries in the conference in order for the league to keep the same vibe it’s had in the past.
Those figure to be Florida-Georgia, Alabama-Auburn, and Ole Miss-Missisippi State. All the others are up for grabs.
But given all the talk about moving this game to a home and home, and then a deal being finalized to keep it in Jacksonville for a few years, it’s impossible to take it off the schedule.
The SEC East has been the Florida and Georgia show for the past seven years, with Florida winning the division three of those compared to Georgia’s four.
Even with divisions disintegrating, that still holds weight.
If you took a poll of college football’s greatest rivalries, Florida-Georgia will be in everyone’s top ten, if not the top five.
It’s a game that just can’t be taken off the schedule. Ever.
So with the new schedule, and these two teams no longer being in a division together, the game will stay intact and we’ll still see them every year.
