Florida Football Worst Coaches: Charley Pell

  • Head Coach from 1979 to 1984
  • 33-26-3 Record

When you have the worst winning percentage of any head coach Florida football has had since1960 AND you left the university under a major scandal, that earns you a place on top of the worst head coaches the Florida Gators have had.

To be fair, after the 0-10-1 1979 season, the Gators were no worse than some of the other squads we have chronicled on this list.

And in 1983, the Gators finished 9-2-1 and were 6th in the country, and in 1984 were 9-1-1 and finished 3rd in the nation.

The problem is that Pell racked up 107 NCAA violations, including allegations of spying on other practices, paying players, and skirting the rules for where walk-ons could live.

Pell was removed midseason in 1984, Florida was stripped of 20 scholarships, had to forfeit its 1984 SEC Championship, was banned from being on TV and going to a bowl game, and ultimately set the program back for years until the sanctions were lifted and Steve Spurrier came in to clean up the mess.
